Can See You

I can see you inside a water drop
rolling off the ends of leaves—
I can see you running down the sink
into the crying earth beneath—
I can see you on the pavement's face,
that asphalt made of sand,
I can see you on the ocean wave
washing grains into my hand.

I can see you in the sooty cloud
blocking out our only sun—
I can see you running in the runoff
into the sea when the journey's done—
I can see you off the highway pass
littered along the lane,
I can see you lighting up the night
and thickening up the rain.

Though you came from my very hands
and grew up in the air
to obscure an awesome view—
Though you came from out of nowhere,
everywhere I can see you.

I can see you in the wilting trees
and taste you in the snow—
I can see you in the songs of birds
that long decay before they grow—
I can see you within this virus build
across the concrete land,
I can see you in the tilled up ground
turning soil into sand.

Though you’re born from the earthy dust,
when adolescence came
in creating something new
you turned your early steel to rust—
but as dust will I always see you.

I can see you growing up so fast
before my very eyes—
I can see you going on without me,
from the nest before the skies—
I can see you through the gas mask
clipped around your face,
And even though we can not kiss
I can still see you in this place.

Though you return nothing
and scorch my trust,
Though you sit back hungry
biting off the crust, as dust
I will always see you.

Though a world is spurned
you say you’ve learned,
But you’ll decay and grow

and never really know, for as I bestow
so I will always see you.
